Key Takeaways
What actually makes an exhibition stand eco-friendly?
It's not one material. It's how the whole stand performs across its life.
|
Reuse |
Modular frames used across many shows |
Avoids building and binning a new stand each time |
|
Graphics |
Dye-sublimated fabric instead of PVC |
Lighter, folds small and reusable |
|
Weight |
Lightweight aluminium in compact cases |
Less transport fuel and fewer vehicles |
|
Energy |
LED lighting |
Lower power use and a long life |
|
End of life |
Recyclable frames, and graphics that can be reused or recycled |
Keeps materials out of landfill |
|
Evidence |
Supplier certifications and waste data |
Proves your claims |
Why does sustainable exhibiting matter now?
Because the waste adds up fast. The average UK event generates 2.14kg of waste per attendee, according to isla's Temperature Check Report, and much of it is avoidable. Multiply that across 1,154 UK exhibitions and around 6.8 million visitors in 2025, and the scale is clear.
The industry is also starting to measure its impact. isla's 2025 report analysed data from almost 1,000 events on its TRACE carbon platform.
"The sector faces growing urgency to adapt to a changing world"

Buyers, organisers and your own leadership are increasingly asking one question: what happens to your stand after the show?
Which sustainable display options work best?
|
Modular aluminium frames |
Reused for years and recyclable |
Higher upfront cost than single-use |
Regular exhibitors |
|
Fabric graphics |
Light, reusable and folds small |
Needs careful packing |
Back walls and counters |
|
SEG lightboxes with LEDs |
Efficient lighting and swappable graphics |
Needs power |
Premium focal points |
|
Reusable counters and table covers |
Replace disposable furniture dressing |
None significant |
All stands |
|
Hired stand structures |
Frames go back to the supplier for reuse |
Less ownership |
Occasional exhibitors |
|
Cardboard or board-based stands |
Recyclable after use |
Often single-use and less durable |
One-off events |
The rule of thumb: the longer a display lasts and the more shows it serves, the lower its footprint per show.
Here's what exhibitors usually get wrong
- Choosing "recyclable" over reusable. Recyclable only helps if it actually gets recycled. Reuse avoids the waste altogether.
- Building a new stand for every show. One-off custom builds are the biggest source of stand waste.
- Printing dates and show names on graphics. That makes them impossible to reuse. Keep graphics timeless.
- Ignoring transport. Heavy crates mean bigger vehicles and more fuel. Weight is a sustainability issue.
- Forgetting the lighting. Old halogen spotlights waste energy. LEDs use 80% less electricity for the same brightness.
- Making claims you can't prove. "Eco" without evidence is greenwashing, and buyers notice.
How much does a sustainable stand really cost?
Upfront, a reusable system can cost more. Over a season, it usually costs less.
Example: a 3m x 3m stand over five shows
|
First show |
About £800 |
About £1,800 |
|
Each extra show |
About £800 (new build) |
About £250 (new graphics only, if needed) |
|
Total over 5 shows |
About £4,000 |
About £2,800 |
|
Waste |
Five stands binned |
One frame reused |
These are indicative figures for illustration. Actual costs depend on size, finishes, and how often you refresh graphics.
How do you prove your stand is sustainable?
Ask your suppliers for evidence, not adjectives:
- ISO 20121: the international standard for sustainable event management , which began as a British Standard.
- ESSA Sustainability Accreditation: a tiered accreditation for UK event suppliers, with Tier 5 as the highest level.
- Material specifications: frame materials, fabric type, and recycled content.
- Weights and dimensions: these support your transport and carbon reporting.
- End-of-life plan: what happens to the frame and graphics when you're finished with them.
- Waste records: if you dispose of anything, use a registered carrier and keep your waste transfer notes.
Then track your own data for each show: kg of waste, vehicles used, and power consumed.
Your Sustainable Stand Checklist: The 5R Framework
|
Reuse |
Will this stand work at every show this year and next? |
☐ |
|
Reduce weight |
Does it pack into light, compact cases? |
☐ |
|
Replace PVC |
Are the graphics fabric rather than vinyl? |
☐ |
|
Rethink power |
Is all the lighting LED? |
☐ |
|
Recover |
Is there an end-of-life plan for the frame and graphics? |
☐ |
Tick all five, and you have a stand that's genuinely more sustainable and easy to defend in your ESG report.
