LED Light Box Displays: Complete Exhibition Guide

Key Takeaways

  • LED light boxes create their own contrast, so your graphics stand out under flat hall lighting.
  • Most use SEG fabric graphics, which are seamless, frameless and easy to swap.
  • Design artwork for light: bright colours glow, while heavy dark areas look dull.
  • Order power early. Every illuminated display needs a socket from the venue's contractor.
  • LEDs are efficient and long-lasting, making lightboxes a smart long-term investment.

What Is an LED Light Box Display?

An LED light box is an aluminium frame with LED lighting built in and a printed fabric graphic stretched across the front. The light shines through the fabric, so your artwork glows evenly from edge to edge.

Most exhibition lightboxes use SEG (silicone edge graphics). A thin silicone strip is sewn around the edge of the fabric, and you push it into a channel in the frame. The result is taut, wrinkle-free and frameless.

There are two main lighting styles:

  • Backlit: LEDs sit behind the graphic for strong, even light. This is best for larger walls.
  • Edge-lit: LEDs run around the frame edge for a slimmer, lighter unit. This suits smaller or wall-mounted displays.

Why Choose an LED Light Box?

1. You'll stand out in a crowded hall

UK shows are busy. In 2025, 1,154 exhibitions drew almost 6.8 million visitors and 139,000 exhibitors. Trade shows made up the largest share, at 42%. In halls full of flat graphics, a glowing wall catches the eye from the aisle.

2. They're energy efficient

LED bulbs match halogen brightness but use 80% less electricity, according to the Energy Saving Trust, and can last up to 20 times longer. That means low running costs and years of use.

3. They look premium and photograph well

Backlit fabric has no glare, holds colour and looks sharp in photos and videos. That's ideal for social media and press coverage.

4. They're reusable

Swap the fabric graphic for a new campaign and keep the frame and lights.

Designing Artwork for LED Lightboxes

Backlit artwork behaves differently from printed graphics. Follow these rules:

  • Use bright, saturated colours. They glow when lit.
  • Avoid large areas of solid black. Dark areas block light and look flat.
  • Keep text bold and large. Thin fonts can blur when backlit.
  • Keep one focal point. Light draws the eye, so give it one place to land.
  • Follow the supplier's template. SEG graphics need exact sizing and bleed.
  • Ask for a lit proof or colour test for brand-critical colours.

Brightness, Glare and Comfort

Carlile also stresses avoiding glare and excessive contrast. For your stand, that means:

  • Choose even, diffused light rather than hot spots.
  • Avoid pointing extra spotlights at a lightbox.
  • Place staff and seating so nobody looks straight into the light for long periods.

Power and Safety

Every LED lightbox needs power. Plan it early:

  1. Order power from the venue's official electrical contractor well before the show.
  2. Check socket positions on your stand plan so they match where the lightboxes will go.
  3. Keep cables tidy and taped down so nobody trips.
  4. Bring PAT-tested equipment. Many venues ask for it. The HSE's portable appliance testing guidance explains that the law requires electrical equipment to be kept safe.
  5. Use contractors who work to BS 7909, the British Standard for temporary electrical systems at events, on larger stands. This sits on top of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, the underlying UK law that requires electrical systems to be constructed and maintained so they don't create danger.
  6. Ask for fire certificates for fabric graphics. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, event organisers must assess fire risk and limit what can fuel a fire, which is why venues expect fabrics tested to standards such as BS 5867-2.

If your display uses plastic diffusers, the Society of Light and Lighting's Lighting Factfile LF12 (2026) gives updated guidance on thermoplastic diffusers and UK fire safety regulations.

Setting Up an LED Light Box

A typical freestanding SEG lightbox goes up like this:

  1. Assemble the frame with push-fit or tool-free connectors.
  2. Attach the feet and stand the frame upright.
  3. Connect the LED modules and the power supply.
  4. Push the SEG graphic into the frame channel, working from the corners.
  5. Plug in and test the lighting before the doors open.

Most standard lightbox walls take 20–40 minutes with two people.

Care and Storage

  • Clean fabric graphics with a soft cloth or mild soap. Dry them fully before packing.
  • Check the LED strips and cables after every show.
  • Store frames in padded cases in a dry place.
  • Fold or roll the graphics loosely, protecting the silicone edge.

Indicative cost (ex VAT)

Tabletop lightbox

About £275–£950

1m–2m freestanding lightbox

About £350–£500

3m lightbox wall

About £1,000–£1,200

Lightbox counter

About £500

6m lightbox wall or complete kit

About £1,400–£1,900+

Replacement SEG graphic

About about £80–£250 (small sizes)

Common Mistakes

  • Dark, heavy artwork. It won't glow, so design for light.
  • Forgetting to order power. A lightbox with no socket is just a frame.
  • Placing the display in direct light. Bright hall or sun spots wash out the effect.
  • Too many lightboxes. One strong focal point beats several competing glows.
  • Leaving it late. Allow 7–14 days for production and 2–5 working days for delivery by DPD, Royal Mail or DX.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an LED light box display? +
It's an aluminium frame with built-in LED lighting and a printed fabric graphic across the front. The light shines through the fabric, making your artwork glow evenly. Most exhibition lightboxes use SEG fabric for a seamless, frameless finish.
Do LED lightboxes use a lot of electricity? +
No. LED lighting is very efficient. The Energy Saving Trust says LEDs use 80% less electricity than halogen bulbs for the same brightness. You'll still need to order a power supply from the venue.
Can I change the graphic on an LED lightbox? +
Yes. SEG graphics push into the frame channel and pull out again, so you can swap in new artwork for each campaign and keep the frame and lights.
How long does it take to set up an LED lightbox? +
Most standard freestanding lightbox walls take 20–40 minutes with two people. Smaller and tabletop lightboxes are quicker.
What artwork works best on a lightbox? +
Bright, saturated colours, bold text and one clear focal point. Avoid large areas of solid black, which block light and look flat. Always follow the supplier's template and request a proof.
